"Birthright, Part I"

Data uses painting as catharsis! In a positively excellent exploration of what can only be called Data's subconscious, he paints images from his dreams in order to find the message he feels certain is behind them.

Given the confusion that inspired them, the straightforward, realistic style of Data's 23 paintings in this episode is surprising. These representational paintings are of blacksmiths, birds, smoke, and hands, done on the sort of chintzy dime-store canvases that one would have hoped would be obsolete by the 24rd century (staples on the side—how gauche!), and are churned out at lightning ambidextrous speed by Data as he is plagued by nightmarish visions of his birth—er, origin.
