There's nothing quite as overtly sinister in the real world of clinical ecology as the clinic in "Safe," but there are plenty of people ready to sell snake oil to EI sufferers, starting with the assertion that "environmental illness" is an actual disease (or condition, or syndrome—the interchangeability of these terms in the literature is emblematic of clinical ecologists' hand waving). It isn't a disease in the sense of a specific problem caused by a specific agent. Rather, EI is basically any dysfunction of which the human body is capable, credited to the cruelty of the modern world and its "chemicals."
